Moving In

Home Sweet Home

Our front Room (kitchen and 2nd bdrm./bath to the rt.)

What could bring you back down to earth after an amazing wedding and a fabulous honeymoon? I'll tell you....coming back to Los Angeles and being homeless for 2 days! Seriously. Our move in experience was awful! We decided a few months prior to the wedding that we were going to move into the UCLA married student housing. It's in a great location and is extremely affordable for a 2 bedroom/2 bathroom place. So, despite having to give up having an in-apartment washer/dryer, we agreed that it would be the best place for us for the next 3 years while Ryan finishes the Orthodontic program at UCLA.

Ryan had been calling to set things up and had been promised a 2 bdrm./2bathrm. unit on a second floor w/ a garage. We were told that we had to have our marriage license before we could move in, so we had a friend bring a copy down with her after the wedding to turn in to the housing office to make the transition a little bit faster, so we thought.

We returned home from our great honeymoon, spent the 1st night in a hotel, and planned on moving in Monday morning. I had taken Monday and Tuesday off work to be able to move everything, and Ryan had lined up several helpers for me since missing school isn't really an option for him right now. Well, come to find out, the housing office neglected to tell us that we needed the county signatures on our marriage license (those take 8-12 weeks to get processed). So, luckily the lady said they would make an exception since they never told us about that and then told us that we could move in Tuesday morning at 8:00am since our unit was "still being cleaned."

Monday night, a nice, older couple that we know from church put us up for the night in their guest room. We went to the housing office first thing Tuesday and come to find out that the woman Ryan had been working with was out sick! How convenient of her. So, her supervisor looks at our file and sees the missing signatures, so we had to go through the whole thing again with her. Meanwhile, Ryan is missing class, but by 11:15, we were told we could go look at our place. We walk in and turned right back around to say it wasn't going to work. That's right. People were cleaning it at that very moment; it was filthy, it was the strangest, most nonfunctional floor plan you've ever seen and nothing like what we had looked at before, it was on the 1st floor, and there was no garage!!! In my frustration and disappointment, I started crying. Ryan felt sooooo bad.

Master Bathroom

When we got back to the office, by this point the lady felt really bad that we were put into this situation, so she looked at what was available, and after sitting and waiting for what seemed like forever, she came back and miraculously, there was a 2nd floor unit, with a garage that was cleaned and ready to go! Why they couldn't have assigned that one to us the in first place, who knows! We could have moved in there on Monday. So annoying. Ryan goes back to school, I call the guys to come help me move, and the housing lady calls and says we have to re-do all the paper and that Ryan has to be the one to sign them in person before we get any keys. Ugh! These people were so unorganized, it was ridiculous. Anyway, I go get Ryan, he signs their stupid papers, and we were finally able to move in by Tuesday afternoon.

Master Bedroom

It wasn't until Thursday night, after several different crews of guys, and several truck borrowings, that we had moved all of my stuff and his stuff from our apartments, but it was nice to at least have our own place. Our bedroom set was delivered Tuesday night, and our kitchen table was delivered Thursday afternoon. We bought a couch that next weekend and got it a couple weeks later. Oh the adventure! Piece by piece, things are coming together. Isn't marriage fun?!
